Culture and Townscape

Villecomtal is a medieval village dating from the 13th century, built of red sandstone, and bears the “Petite Cité de Caractère d’Occitanie” label. The town’s preserved fortified gate is called “lo portal bas”.

The Church of Saint Barthélémy in Villecomtal was built between 1700 and 1715. It houses a polychrome wooden Pietà dating from the 12th century and has a pulpit made by a sculptor and cabinetmaker from Villecomtal. The Espace des Enfarinés is located in a 15th-century house considered evidence of Villecomtal’s medieval architecture.

The wider area around Villecomtal is home to the historic site of Abbaye Sainte-Foy de Conques, the ancient site of Roquemissou, the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bonneval monastery and Château de La Mothe.

Hiking and Cycling

The Villecomtal-Contensouzes circular route is 9 kilometres long, takes around three hours and starts at the exit of Villecomtal towards Rodez. The Chemin de Servières is a 10-kilometre hiking trail with a walking time of around 2 hours and 50 minutes, as well as 272 metres of both positive and negative elevation gain. This route also includes a shaded section.

Villecomtal can be reached by bicycle; follow the “La vallée du Lot à vélo” signs. The Voie de Conques (V86) runs from Villecomtal to Espalion.
