Culture and History

The Hospitaller commandery in Lugan consists of a square fortified house with four round towers, three of which are fortified, as well as a chapel and farm buildings. During a visit, visitors can learn about the world of the Hospitallers, the Order of Malta and everyday life in the Middle Ages.

In 1180, D. Baldois, Baldois de Lugan and R de Frotgairesc transferred to the Hospital of Jerusalem all rights to the lands they owned in Lugan.

The church of Lugan was originally the chapel of the commandery. It has two 19th-century altarpieces, which are listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The 33-metre-high bell tower is octagonal, stands on a square plan and can be reached via a wooden spiral staircase.

The Château de la Garinie in Lugan was built in the 14th century, remodelled several times and retains elements of medieval military architecture.
