History and culture

Mijanès is an early medieval village; known traces of human settlement date back several millennia. Prehistoric and Iron Age remains include Neolithic pastoral clearings, burial chambers, dolmens and menhirs, as well as an early Iron Age necropolis.

The historic villagescape includes a Catalan forge dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Mijanès is also home to a polychrome “Vierge en Majesté” from the late 14th or early 15th century, which is classified as a Historic Monument.

Nature

A network of former rural paths extends from Mijanès; these paths are now marked, open and maintained. The Forêt du Donezan near Mijanès covers 10,500 hectares.

Activities

The Falaise d'escalade de Mijanès-Donezan climbing wall has 9 routes and 9 pitches, with difficulty ratings ranging from 4 sup to 6A. The hike to Étang de Balbonne begins in Mijanès and is a 5.4-kilometre round trip; it passes through pine forest and areas where horses roam freely.

A circular hike to the Étangs de Rabassoles begins in Mijanès and leads to the three Rabassoles ponds. Numerous marked hiking trails lead from the forest track in the Forêt du Donezan, including to Étang du Laurenti.

Winter

The Mijanès-Donezan Nordic winter sports area has 15 kilometres of cross-country ski trails and lies at an elevation of 1,530 to 1,730 metres. Mijanès-Donezan offers marked snowshoe trails, and the Mijanès-Donezan ski area offers alpine skiing. The resort is a starting point for ski touring, including to the Tarbesou.

A forest track through the Forêt du Donezan is converted into a cross-country ski trail in winter. In winter, the Mijanès-Donezan resort can only be reached by road from the Aude region via Quillan or via the Capcir.
