Culture and history
The historic centre of Mazères’ bastide preserves a very regular grid layout that follows the winding course of the banks of the Hers. The architecture also includes half-timbered houses.
One defining building is the Halle de Mazères. It was built between 1845 and 1851 by the architect Coma as a neoclassical market hall. The hall as a whole is protected as a historic monument; it was listed by decree on 27 October 2004.
The Musée de l’Hôtel Ardouin is located in a pastel mansion built in 1580, with a garden designed in the spirit of the Renaissance. The Musée des barbares presents a permanent exhibition on the history of the excavations at the Bénazet archaeological site, around 2 km from Mazères on the left bank of the Hers, including a Visigothic necropolis from the 5th century and a Merovingian necropolis from the 6th to the 8th century.
Cloth production is also part of the town’s history: Mazères became one of the five centres of cloth production in the Pays de Foix.
Local life
The Mazères weekly market takes place every Thursday morning at Place du Général de Gaulle, which is also called Place de l’église. The Mazères market is promoted as a place to sample local specialities.
