Culture and History
The Saint-Pierre Church in Argein is a medieval church dating from the 12th century. Its Romanesque nave was extended by three additional bays in the 14th century.
The polychrome and gilded 18th-century liturgical ensemble comprises a baldachin altarpiece, a tabernacle, and a statue of Saint Peter; it is listed as a Monuments Historiques site. The removal of the 18th-century altar uncovered numerous wall paintings and painted wooden decorations in Saint-Pierre.
A new church was built in the 19th century next to the medieval Saint-Pierre Church.
Hiking and Pilgrimage Route
Above Argein lies Les granges de Juncalas, a very easy family hiking trail. The circular route is approximately 4 km long, takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 190 metres.
The circular route begins at the Place de l'Eglise in Argein; the church is indicated as the parking location. It follows a section of the GR78, the Chemin de Saint-Jacques, and runs through the Parc Naturel des Pyrénées Ariégeoises.
Scenery Along the Route
Les granges de Juncalas passes by barns that were formerly used to store hay and leads to the Plateau de Paleraze, which offers a remarkable panorama.
