Saint-Louis: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Saint-Louis–Arzviller Inclined Plane was put into operation in 1969 and replaced 17 traditional locks in the nearby Vallée des Éclusiers. A visit includes the permanent exhibition, access to the upper platform to observe the manoeuvres, a tour of the museum ship “Sophie-Marie” and the engine room.

Nature and Trails

In the forest near the Inclined Plane in the municipality of Saint-Louis lies the Rocher du Calice, a rock formation. Its distinctive shape was formed by erosion. The Circuit des Éclusiers leads from the former flight of locks, with its historical connections to lock keepers and boatmen, past striking pink Vosges sandstone rocks and through shady forests to the Inclined Plane.

The Vallée des Éclusiers can be explored from the Inclined Plane by bicycle, on foot or by tourist train. The Véloroute V52 also follows the banks of the Marne–Rhine Canal to Arzviller; the Saint-Louis Arzviller Inclined Plane is cited as the highlight of the route.

Experiences

The Luge alpine coaster has a 500-metre-long track running through trees along the Zorn Valley, reaching up to 6 metres above the ground. Children aged 8 and over may use the Luge alpine coaster when accompanied by an adult. At the foot of the Inclined Plane, the Mini-port de la luge du Plan Incliné offers electric boat rides lasting 15 or 30 minutes.

Culture and Surroundings

Several named architectural and landscape features are located in the vicinity of Saint-Louis: Château du Haut-Barr is a castle, Château d'Ochsenstein is a ruin and Château des Rohan is a palace. Nusskopf, Schweizerberg, Seebfels and Wuestenberg are mountains in the vicinity of Saint-Louis. Château du Grand Géroldseck, a ruin, is also located there.
