Culture and history
The stone keep is over 20 metres high and was designated a Monument historique in 1998. Since 18 August 2021, the Tour du Plô has been open to the public and provides access to a panoramic terrace.
For 200 years, kaolin from Marcognac supplied the Manufacture Royale de Sèvres and, from the 19th century onwards, the porcelain factories of Limoges. The Marcognac site was designated a Monument historique in 2002 as part of industrial archaeology.
The Collégiale du Moustier houses a silver reliquary of Saint Aredius, a copper Eucharistic dove, and a 13th-century reliquary made of gilded and enamelled copper. The bell tower portal features Limousin archivolts; the southern Gothic portal is topped by a 12th-century Christ in Majesty.
Museums and events
The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire offers a semi-permanent exhibition route that is renewed every two years. The Micro-Folie in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche is a digital museum and a virtual reality space. By appointment, it offers personalised presentations in the form of conferences, interactive tours or workshops with a cultural mediator.
The Marcognac Terre de porcelaine association organises guided tours and events at the site every year. Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche’s listed events programme includes the Salon de la Madeleine et du Chocolat.
The Château de la Brégère is a fortified house dating from the 15th century, 7 kilometres from Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, and is open to visitors.
Trails and how to get there
The Sentier de la Rochette is an easy 6.9-kilometre circular hiking trail starting from Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, with an elevation gain of 103 metres. It begins at Lac d'Arfeuille and leads back to the lake.
The Aire du Camping du lac d'Arfeuille can be reached via the A20 motorway, exit 42, the D704 between Limoges and Périgueux, regional bus route No. 40, and the Limoges–Saint-Yrieix SNCF railway line.
