South of Camélas, the Ermitage Saint-Martin-de-la-Roca stands on the rocky promontory of Quérubi. From there, it offers an exceptional 360-degree panorama over the Roussillon plain, the Mediterranean Sea and the Canigou Massif. The hermitage is a Romanesque chapel; a second nave was added in the 14th century. It can be reached via an easy path from the village of Camélas.
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Fructueux is a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century. Its pink marble portal preserves, on its pillars, the memory of the mother of a local landowner. Around 1425, twelve paintings were assembled in the church to form a single altarpiece; it depicts the life of Saint Nicholas.
The Ermitage Saint-Martin-de-la-Roca first appears in written sources in 1259, under the name “Ecclésia Sancti Martini de Rupe”. The Dolmen de la Caixeta is located in Camélas at the place-name Solar del Mouton. It was erected during the Megalithic period around 2500 BC and has been classified as a historic monument since 7 October 1959.
In the immediate vicinity of Camélas lies the Chapelle Santa Engracià church. Due to its very poor condition, only the stones serving as supports remain of the Dolmen Arques del Coll de Maures.
