Culture and History
In Corneilla-la-Rivière, the Church of Saint-Martin offers a direct link to the village’s history: it has been documented since 951 and was consecrated in 1145 by Bishop Ugaldar of Elne. In 1640, it was looted and set on fire by the retreating Spanish army under Jean de Garai; it was rebuilt the following year.
Medieval Corneilla-la-Rivière was characterised by thick fortified walls with four towers, two of which are still preserved today. The Church of Saint-Martin also houses the polychrome wooden sculpture Misteri de Nostra Senyora dels Dolors from the 18th century. It was listed on 30 April 1980 under the designation ISMH PM66001506.
