Banassac lies at the confluence of the Urugne and the Saint-Saturnin, which flow into the Lot there. Iron-rich sandstone is often a feature of the townscape, giving Banassac its characteristic red colour.

At La Gravière, there is a fitness trail with numerous wooden exercise stations, as well as paths for walking and Nordic walking. Along the path, there are also wooden totems carved by a local artist. They depict various animal species found in the Lot Valley and are complemented by information boards. La Gravière is intended as a public space for residents, tourists, neighbours, families, friends, athletes and those seeking relaxation.

Culture and History

The Pont de Montferrand spans the Lot. It consists of one large central arch and two smaller side arches; it has been listed as a historic monument since 1935. Saint-Médard Church contains the shallow burial niche known as the “Enfeu of Saint-Firmin”, which is decorated with two angels.

The Musée de Banassac presents the archaeological past of Banassac-Canilhac. This includes the Chasséen heritage, terra sigillata pottery and the history of the coins minted during the Merovingian period. Objects discovered during excavations carried out before construction work on the A75 motorway, in the remains of a mausoleum, are also displayed there.

During the Gallo-Roman period, Banassac was known for producing terra sigillata pottery, which was distributed throughout the Roman Empire. In the 6th and 7th centuries, the town developed into an important minting centre for the Merovingian kings.
