History
The Pont Canal, also known as the Rebaut double aqueduct, “La Birouge” or “La Tine,” is a three-arched structure. Construction began in 1693; it carries the waters of the La Quarante beneath the Canal du Midi and was most recently restored by the Bâtiments de France.
The Musée Archéologique de Quarante presents a collection ranging from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Its collections also include pieces from the Chalcolithic, the Iron Age, as well as from the Gallo-Roman, Visigothic and early medieval periods.
Quarante is home to capitelles: domed huts made of dry-stone masonry without mortar, which formerly provided small landowners, their tools and their agricultural produce with temporary shelter.
