Culture and History

The La Monédière oppidum was inhabited mainly between the beginning of the 6th and the end of the 5th century BC. The site is considered a reference site for regional protohistory and for relations between the Greeks and the local populations. The Saint-Pierre Gate is the only surviving gate of Bessan’s former fortifications.

Nature

The Monts Ramus are a range of three volcanic cones. The Mègeries Plateau in Bessan, in the Hérault département, is a 33-hectare Natura 2000 site where vineyards, cultivated land and fallow land lie side by side. Guided tours of the Mègeries Plateau are organised as part of the Fête de la Nature.

Culinary Specialties

La Croustade is a puff pastry tart typical of Bessan, filled with a mixture of raisins or chocolate and walnuts. The recipe was developed just over a century ago. La Croustade is available at most local bakeries.

Maison ETIENNE in Bessan offers a guided tour covering the history of coffee, a coffee-roasting demonstration and an introduction to tasting. Le Moulin du Mont Ramus operates a farm with 30,000 olive trees and produces olive oil, table olives, tapenade and cosmetic products.

Since its founding in 1938, the Cave Coopérative de Bessan has focused on the vinification of rosé wines. At the Rosé de Bessan cooperative winery, visitors can taste Bessan rosé wine.

Events and Activities

The Fête de la Saint-Laurent festival takes place every year at the beginning of August. Bessan Aventure offers three courses – Découverte, Rando and Orientation – for all levels.
