Routes

The greenway from Anduze to Cardet runs through Tornac, Massillargues-Atuech and Lézan between Anduze and Cardet.

The “Lacan et le château de Tornac” hike is a moderate 8.5 km circular route with 421 m of ascent, 420 m of descent and a stated duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. It passes through pine and evergreen oak forests to the summit of Lacan, which is considered a viewpoint over the Porte des Cévennes. The start and finish are at a car park on the D 907 in Tornac; the route passes through Tornac and Anduze.

The “Le Château de Tornac” circular hike is a 2.7 km loop from Tornac with 116 m of ascent and a stated duration of 40 minutes. It leads to the Château de Tornac and offers a view of the Porte des Cévennes. Continuous yellow markings identify it as a Promenade et Randonnée; the route crosses rocky terrain that is unsuitable for pushchairs.

The “Sens” circular route is a 13 km, approximately three-hour sensory-oriented walk without any major difficulties through Tornac, its hamlets and numerous historic sites or remains. Another hiking route through the Vallée de l’Ourne begins at the Église Saint-Baudile, passes the Monastère and the Fontfroide spring, and extends as far as the Moulin du Baron.

The Grand Tuf de Maliver is considered a geological feature in the vicinity of Tornac on the greenway between Tornac and Anduze.

Culture and history

The Église Saint-Baudile de Tornac stands amid vineyards and is a Romanesque building. It was built in the 12th century and was dependent on the Abbaye Saint-Baudile de Nîmes. It has been protected as a Monument historique since 1911; restoration began in 1984. The present building is said to have been rebuilt in the 12th century and consecrated in 1118 by Pope Gelasius II.

The Monastère de Tornac was the seat of an abbey founded in the 7th century and is privately owned, but visible from the outside. The Monastère Saint-Etienne de Tornac is considered one of the oldest monastic foundations in eastern Languedoc and was already mentioned in 808 as being dependent on the Abbaye Saint-Baudile de Nîmes. The gardens of the Monastère de Tornac are occasionally opened in summer for classical music concerts.

The Stèle de la Madeleine in Tornac commemorates the Battle of La Madeleine on 25 August 1944, in which 32 Spanish guerrilla fighters stopped a German convoy. The Glacière de Tornac at La Madeleine was built in the 17th century by the De La Fare family, the owners of the Château de Tornac at the time. The Battle of La Madeleine in Tornac took place on 20 December 1703 in the plain of Tornac between the Camisards and royal troops under the command of Monsieur de La Haye.

Access to the Château de Tornac was prohibited by a municipal order because there was no access route for emergency vehicles in the event of a fire.

Wine

The Cave des vignerons de Tornac is open daily except Sundays. On Fridays in July and August, open days with guided cellar tours are held.
