Culture and History

The Château de Ners was modified in 1480 under Louis XI and has preserved its rusticated walls. In Ners, you can also admire a watchtower dating from the 12th century. The Church of Saint Sauveur was built at the foot of the hill of Ners, at the site where a spring emerged.

Ners lies on the Voie Régordane, an ancient Celtic route that was later developed by the Romans as a connection between Saint-Gilles and Le Puy-en-Velay. The long-distance hiking trail GR 700 runs through Ners along the former Voie Régordane. Historically, the village was also a ferry crossing on the Gardon, where merchants, pilgrims, crusaders and armed men crossed the river; since the 12th century, a toll known as “néré” was collected for this.

The village is characterised by large residential buildings constructed on the sites of former magnaneries, that is, silkworm farms. Ners has numerous vaulted passageways and numerous footbridges connecting the houses.

Landscape

The landscapes of Ners include vineyards, wooded hillsides, vegetable-growing areas and orchards. In the distance, the distinctive silhouette of the Cévennes mountains can be seen. The Guillaumet spring in Ners has been channelled, while the Canalet enables the irrigation of family gardens in Ners.

Trails and Water

The long-distance hiking trail GR6 passes through Ners. In Ners, the Gardon offers opportunities for fishing under the bridge, along its banks and on its dam.

The Pont de Ners was the village’s first stone bridge. Today, it is an almost 230-metre-long combined viaduct carrying a road and a double-track railway line. The hills of Ners are also crossed by a tunnel. The Pont de Ners was used to transport coal from the Cévennes basin to the ports on the Rhône.
