Bez-et-Esparon: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Bez consists of picturesque houses in a bend of the river at the confluence of the Arre and Merlanson. The hamlet of Esparon lies above the Arre valley and offers views of the mountains of the Pays viganais and the foothills of the Causse de Blandas. Landscape and Trails
The route Du Bosc au valat de Merlason is a moderately difficult, 9 km circular hike lasting four hours, beginning and ending in Bez-et-Esparon. Along the route, livestock farming areas, vegetable-growing plots, meadows and chestnut groves extend in successive tiers from the valley floor to the heights of the village. Optionally, the route offers a there-and-back trail to Esparon, with its chapel and panorama, as well as another there-and-back trail to Notre-Dame de Bez to enjoy a panorama there.
The VTT trail La vallée de l'Arre n°1 is an easy 16.5 km there-and-back route lasting two and a half hours along the Arre and passing through Bez-et-Esparon. The nearby 3.5 km Voie verte La Promenade du viaduc also runs along the former Tournemire (Aveyron)–Le Vigan (Gard) railway line.
Culture and History
The route Les bonnetiers passes through Bez-et-Esparon and reaches the Viaduc Lavassac. The Viaduc Lavassac is an Eiffel-style structure built at the end of the 19th century for the railway line.
The hamlet of Esparon has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments since 1976. The Four à pain d'Esparon, Esparon's historic bread oven, is listed as a tourist attraction. Bez-et-Esparon also has a 12th-century church listed as a tourist attraction.
Regional Products
Since 2022, La ferme d’Esparon has offered fresh chestnuts, almonds, walnuts, asparagus, sweet onions and butternut squash, as well as processed products such as chestnut cream and onion confit. Aux saveurs d’ici et d’ailleurs produces local products such as confit made from sweet Cévennes onions and wild garlic pesto, and is present at the Bez-et-Esparon market on Wednesdays from June to September.
