Culture and History
The origins of the Château de Sommières date back to the 11th century. Construction of the keep, the Tour Bermond, began at the end of the 12th century.
The Pont romain de Sommières was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD. The bridge has been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages and is one of the rare inhabited bridges in Europe. It is said to comprise at least 21 arches; only seven of them are visible on the Vidourle.
Sommières' rural, popular cultural heritage includes fountains, dry-stone structures, dovecotes, masets, lime or bread ovens, and ice houses. Part of the town is designated as a protected historic sector; its cultural heritage is subject to an ongoing preservation and restoration policy.
The Tour Bermond in the Château de Sommières is 22 metres high and offers a panorama as well as an orientation table. Following restoration work in 2014 and 2015, the Château de Sommières was opened to the public for several months each year.

The 12-kilometre De Voies en Voix route begins in Sommières or Calvisson and passes through eight stops along the Voie verte de la Vaunage. Along the way, it conveys part of the history of the former railway.
