Brignon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Today’s medieval village of Brignon developed from the square donjon and lies at the foot of the Serre de Brienne hill. Its town fortifications date from the 12th century. The fortified walls enclose the village south of the château and the former Romanesque church.

Culture

The donjon of Brignon dates from the late 11th century. From the 12th and 13th centuries, a medieval château developed around it, with an inner chemin de ronde, arrow slits and gun embrasures.

The Chapelle de Brignon was built at the end of the 11th century and extended in the 12th century. It was dedicated to Saint Paul. The 14-metre-high Tour de l’Horloge is a medieval tower that formed the passage through the fortified wall to the château. In 1862, a public clock was installed in the Tour de l’Horloge.

The northwestern round tower of Brignon dates from the 13th century. Its first and second floors contain three preserved gun embrasures.

Landscape

From the end of the 5th century BC, a settlement on the oppidum on the hill gradually spread over twelve hectares. The ancient oppidum on the Serre de Brienne was already inhabited in the Copper Age, around 2500 BC; it cannot be visited.

Since 2005, the Chapelle de Brignon, the Romanesque chapel, has been the home of the municipal library. During the European Heritage Days, guided tours of the medieval village of Brignon lasting around 1.5 hours start there. The free brochure “Brignon Médiéval Tour” is available during opening hours at the town hall or at the “Le Petit Brignon” café next to the Romanesque chapel.
