Culture

The church of Fourques is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and is also known as Saint Sixte. A recurring event is the Journées Camarguaises, held every year in April and featuring Abrivados, Bandidos and Manade competitions.

History

The Pont suspendu de Fourques was commissioned on 1 April 1830 following a bridge project by engineer Marc Séguin. The Pont de Fourques has been listed and protected as a “Monument historique” since 1988. At the corner of Les Lices and the Vieux Pont, the Rhônomètre shows the development of dyke heights since the 12th century.

The Mur des Justes commemorates the Baud family, who were honoured as “Righteous Among the Nations” for sheltering and hiding two Jewish children during the Second World War. The two-place sarcophagus in Fourques probably dates from the 1st or 2nd century.

The Château Boissy d’Anglas is a walled château in Fourques whose existence dates back to the 11th century. It appears to have been built on the remains of a Roman villa.

Nature

The Voie verte Beaucaire-Fourques ends at the suspension bridge in Fourques. It runs between the Rhône and the Petit Rhône through wetlands and ponds; the riverside woodland along the Petit Rhône is home to a diverse range of birdlife.

Geographical setting

Fourques can be reached via the Nationale 113, the A9 motorway and the CD570 through the Camargue.

Getting around

North of Fourques, cyclists can continue along the ViaRhôna towards Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône or Sète.
