Aujac: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Church of Saint-Martin d'Aujac was built approximately between 1120 and 1160; its bell gable was added in 1479. The nave contains four pillars with capitals decorated with stylized leaves featuring prominent ribs.

The Château du Cheylard d'Aujac illustrates the development of castle architecture from the Middle Ages, particularly the 12th century, through to the Renaissance in the 17th century. Its complex includes a medieval hamlet with a farm, dovecote, sheepfold, clède and chapel. A historical reconstruction called “La Malabestia” takes place on the first weekend of August: it depicts everyday life at Château d'Aujac at the time of the Beast of Gévaudan in the 18th century.

Culture

Traditional chestnut processing is also one of the area's special features. La Clède Peyric is a farm specializing in chestnuts and their traditional processing in a clède. During a visit, you can discover an authentic chestnut dryer that is still in operation, old shelling equipment and a traditional Cévennes beehive.

The so-called Roman road, known as the “voie caladée”, has its best-preserved traces between Aujaguet and Aujac. Château du Cheylard d'Aujac is reached via a five- to ten-minute footpath.

Hiking

The 130-kilometre GRP Le Cévenol passes through Aujac. The GRP Haute Vallée de la Cèze also runs through the village; it is a 52-kilometre circular route completed over three days and three moderately difficult stages.

The Les crêtes d'Aujac - Bordezac hike follows the former livestock trail known as the “draille des crêtes de la Loubière” and then an old Roman road hidden in the pine forest. The local hiking trails in Aujac offer panoramic landscapes and provide access to the Cèze and its bathing areas.

Nature and water

The Sentiers d'Interprétation La Cézarenque form a 2.3-kilometre loop starting in Aujac. They run past scattered hamlets and bancels in a landscape typical of the southern Cévennes, bearing witness to how settlements adapted to environmental conditions. The interpretive trail leads to various points of interest, including the Church of Saint Martin d'Aujac. The “orvet fragile” and the “chicorée des moutons” can also be discovered on the Sentiers d'Interprétation La Cézarenque.

At Pont de Souillas on the Cèze, there is a bathing area that is easily accessible for children and adults.

Landscape

Many faïsses in Aujac are still maintained and clearly visible, shaping an impressive landscape. In the village, the façades display warm slate colours and light surrounds made from “grès d'Aujac”.
