Malves-en-Minervois is a stage on the GR®78, the Chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen, also known as the “Camin Romieu”, one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. The GR®78’s red-and-white trail markers lead through the village.

The terroir of Malves-en-Minervois is characterised by vineyards and garrigue. Several capitelles can be seen on the hills along the circular trail signposted from Rue Trencavel. Most of these capitelles were built by farmers in the 18th and 19th centuries from stones collected while clearing the soil.

The Menhir of Malves, also known as “Peiro Ficado”, stands approximately 500 metres west of the village on a hill above the right bank of the Clamoux. It is about three times the height of a person and probably extends a similar distance into the ground.

Culture and History

The Château de Malves is a Renaissance-style building arranged around a rectangular main structure with a large park. It has four round towers; the two towers facing the village date from the 15th century. The origins of the Château de Malves are medieval and probably date back to the 11th century.

The parish church of Malves is dedicated to Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and is a Gothic building probably dating from the late 15th century. Inside are gilded wooden statues of Saint Roch and the Madonna and Child, probably dating from the 17th century.

Wine

Domaine Villepeyroux Forest has a tasting cellar where visitors are welcome throughout the year. The winery produces, matures and bottles its wines at the estate. By prior reservation, it offers an oenotourism walk for groups of 12 or more.

The vineyards of Domaine Villepeyroux Forest are managed organically and lie between heathland and pine forests under the influence of the Mediterranean climate.
