Culture and Townscape
In Lagrasse, a medieval townscape meets important historic buildings. The Église Saint-Michel was built between 1340 and 1350 and classified as a historic monument in 1925. The former Benedictine Abbey of Sainte-Marie d’Orbieu is protected as a historic monument; its monastic buildings contain architectural evidence dating from the pre-Romanesque period to the 18th century.
The public tour of Lagrasse Abbey includes eleven areas, including the monks’ dormitory, the cellars and the bakery. The medieval abbey palace contains the Saint-Barthélemy Chapel and its vestibule, with remarkably well-preserved decorations. The abbey’s lapidarium contains casts and Romanesque sculptures by the Master of Cabestany. The abbey is divided into two separate sections that can be visited independently: a public area and a private area.
The medieval town of Lagrasse also preserves narrow paved lanes with architectural treasures from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Pont Vieux connects the town centre with the abbey and was already mentioned in 1303. The Maison du Patrimoine displays painted wooden ceilings from the 14th century. The town’s cultural character is complemented by shops and craft workshops, including those specialising in jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, lute making and embroidery.

The area around Lagrasse is suitable for hiking and cycling and offers views of the village and the Corbières. The Orbieu has a bathing area opposite the abbey, set up in July and August.
Market and Events
A market is held on Saturdays in Lagrasse’s covered market hall. The Banquet du Livre takes place three times a year – in spring, summer and autumn – and offers literary and philosophical meetings with writers and thinkers, readings of texts and music by the authors, workshops and film screenings.

From Narbonne, Lagrasse can be reached via the A61 motorway and exit 25 near Lézignan-Corbières. Lagrasse can be reached by train as far as Carcassonne and then by bus.
