Floure: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Floure is a well-preserved manor house east of the village with two square towers. Anyone choosing Floure as a destination will want to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture

The village fountain of Floure was renovated in 1871 and contains sandstone from the local quarries. The fountain has long served as a source of inspiration for artists. On 20 March 1508, Jean de Courcelles, Lord of Floure, received permission to build the Château de Floure in the midst of his domain as a shared prison with the king.

The Church of Saint-Etienne was already documented as a parish church in the middle of the 12th century. The vaults and buttresses of the nave, the chapel, the bell tower and the western window of the choir of Saint-Etienne Church date from the 18th century. Its bell was cast by Jean Pailhaud in 1570.

The elevated archaeological site of Le Laouret was inhabited in the 10th and 11th centuries BC, at the end of the Bronze Age. A report on an excursion to Alaric on 28 June 1891 recorded numerous fragments of ancient pottery and worked flint at the site of Le Laouret. A Christian Merovingian sarcophagus found in Saint-Etienne Church is currently on display in Room VI of the Château Comptal Museum in the Cité of Carcassonne and remains the property of the municipality of Floure.

The war memorial of Floure was erected in 1921 and stands opposite the current cemetery. The Arbre de la Liberté of Floure is a hackberry tree planted in 1989 in the La Mounette housing estate to mark the bicentenary of the French Revolution. On 16 August 1771, the parish community, the consul and the principal inhabitants of Floure pledged to hold a mass and a procession to the church every year on Saint Roch's Day.

A document dated 20 October 1169 records the donation of four setiers of pure wine from the tithe of Floure to the Templars. A Roman milestone was found near the municipality of Floure; traces of Floure appear on the Peutinger Map under the Latin name Liviana.

Local Activities

Floure has an interactive village tour covering local history, with eleven QR codes at buildings, structures and historic sites. Floure's illuminated pétanque court can be used at night.

La Treille de vignes is located in Floure next to the Foyer des campagnes. La Treille de vignes in Floure was established as a project to develop wine tourism and highlight the region's winemaking identity. The association Le Scion Barbairanais Flouréen promotes fishing in the Floure area along the Aude and at Lac du Tonkin.

Hiking

The Autour de Miramont hiking trail passes through Floure; as a circular route, it is moderately difficult and covers 7.4 kilometres, taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. There are four hiking trails on the Massif de l'Alaric. The GR®36 long-distance hiking trail passes through Floure.

The middle trail from the Bretonne River leads to the Bénitiers after a 25-minute climb. On the Alaric section of the GR®36, the route passes through Monze towards the ruins of the Château de Miramont and the Bénitiers de Floure.

Nature

The Bénitiers de l'Alaric are geological features whose unusual limestone formations date from the early Tertiary period. Four Bénitiers are recorded on Alaric, lying just a few metres apart.
