History and culture
Prosper Estieu was born in Fendeille, south of Castelnaudary, on July 7, 1860. He edited the magazine “Lo Gai Saber” from 1919 to 1933 and founded the Collège d’Occitanie in 1927.
In the 13th century, during the Albigensian Crusade, Simon de Montfort, the leader of the crusaders, handed the fortified town of Fendeille over to the Knight of Fontaines. Fendeille Castle preserves a square tower from the 13th century and a façade from the classical period. A commemorative plaque marks Prosper Estieu’s birthplace in Fendeille.
Fendeille Church contains a gilded silver ciborium. This ciborium was classified as an object on December 3, 1965.
