A historic landmark is the Château de Saint-Martin de Toques. The site is documented as a fortress from the year 978 and was built in feudal times to protect the road leading from the Viscounty of Narbonne into the Corbières. Its ruins were listed as a historic monument by decree of 17 February 1926.

Culture and history

The Château de Gaussan is partially protected as a historic monument; the corresponding listing took place on 8 January 1986. In the 13th century, Fontfroide Abbey built a fortified farm in Gaussan. Most of the buildings on the site date from the 19th century and are primarily devoted to winegrowing.

The oldest part of the Saint Amans Priory is the crypt. It contains a medieval column and a clearly visible stone holy water font. The grounds combine the freshness of the springs, the lush greenery of the laurel bushes and the beauty of the historic stonework. This makes it appealing to people seeking peace and appreciating relics of the past.

The façade of Saint Amans Priory is also regarded as remarkable by passers-by on the road to Ornaisons – because of its proportions, the windows partially concealed by vegetation and the buttresses.

Experiences

At Domaine de la Source, visitors can see a free exhibition of minerals from around the world. It also offers an 18-hole miniature golf course for children and adults.

Historically, the site also featured a light trail: visitors could see a staircase filled with amethyst geodes and a passage illuminated by fountains in former wine vats. The tour ended with a projection covering the process from stone extraction to jewellery making.
