Fa is located at the entrance to the Faby Valley, which forms a historic passage between the Aude area and the Quercorb Valley. Fa is mentioned in written sources from the 13th century onward under the name Fano.

History and Culture

The original center of Fa was probably located near today's Tour de Fa. The church bell in Fa was placed under protection as a movable object of the historic monuments on April 14, 1943. The square tower of Fa preserves a fragment of its former fortification enclosure to the west of the tower.

The Tour de Fa has been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1948. It is probably of medieval origin and a remnant of the former castle, which was dependent on the Diocese of Alet and the Archdiocese of Narbonne. Several traces of Gallo-Roman settlement have been discovered in the municipality of Fa and in the surrounding hamlets, including the sites of several villae dating from the beginning of the Christian era, as well as fragments of weapons, coins, and glazed pottery.

Gypsum was mined in Fa for centuries. Two ritual cart wheels from the Bronze Age were discovered in Fa in the second half of the 18th century.

Nature and Trails

The route to the Plateau de Bouichet is 15 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 450 meters, follows an old, winding path to the Tour de Fa, crosses the Coume de Fa, and is classified as difficult. Along the section at the Plateau de Bouichet, the route offers a 360-degree panoramic view.

From Val-du-Faby, the Cité de Carcassonne is stated to be approximately 45 minutes away by car. The Domaine des Abbé Saunière in Rennes-le-Château is stated to be approximately 20 minutes away by car from Fa.
