Sougraigne: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The source of the Sals is a geological curiosity that can be discovered, for example, on a hike from Sougraigne. At its source, the Sals contains up to 60 grams of sodium chloride per litre—about twice as much as seawater.

Nature

The Domaine de l’Eau Salée overlooks and dominates the Sals valley. It covers 600 hectares and is managed by the Office National des Forêts.

History

The Domaine de l’Eau Salée was built shortly after the middle of the 17th century. The grounds preserve the ruins of the Métairie de la Fontaine Salée and the former barracks of the Gabelous.

Things to Do

The “Entre sel et verre” discovery trail runs through the heart of the forest of the Domaine de l’Eau Salée and offers information panels and picnic areas. It is designed as a circular route and divided into information stations, each explaining a chapter in the history of this region.

The permanent orienteering course enables visitors to find their way independently with a map and discover the history of the site on their own using wooden markers in the grounds. A 1:5,000-scale map for the permanent orienteering course is available from the tourist office in Rennes-les-Bains.

The “Entre sel et verre” trail is considered accessible to people with intellectual disabilities and people with hearing impairments. The restored former glassworks is an open site available to hikers.

Culture and Sightseeing

A guided tour of the source of the Sals and the glass furnaces lasts around two and a half hours and requires registration.

The Marche du Sel is an annual, guided hike organised by the Association Salicorne along the routes used by former salt smugglers. Participants reach the salt source of Sougraigne with pack donkeys; on site, salt production using fire and cauldrons is demonstrated.
