The Sentier des Capitelles is an easy 9 km hike with 240 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 3 hours. Instead of Couiza, the route can also be started in Cassaignes.

The Sentier des Capitelles leads between dry-stone walls and capitelles. A capitelle is a shepherd’s shelter made of dry-stone masonry, built stone by stone without mortar.

The Sentier des Capitelles de Couiza-Cassaignes-Coustaussa is a hiking route.

Culture and History

The capitelles of Cassaignes and Coustaussa form a 127.8-hectare site that was registered as a “site inscrit” on 22 March 1972. The Occitan poet Casimir Clottes was born in Cassaignes in 1872.

Le Chantier is a studio-gallery in Cassaignes that took part in the Journées des ateliers d’artistes d’Occitanie on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of October. Visitors could discover the work of Caty Pech and “Espaces sous tension” by the Argentine artist Claudio Scheffer there.

The altarpiece is located at the main altar, is crowned with a pediment, and is made of carved, painted and gilded wood. On 27 December 1947, it was listed as a movable cultural property under heritage protection.
