Herblay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Above the Seine, the Church of Saint-Martin in Herblay stands on the site of a Merovingian cemetery dating from the 7th century. Its oldest part is the transept, dating from the 12th century; construction work continued until the 18th century. Some of the stained-glass windows are protected as historic monuments. These include 16th-century stained-glass windows with grisaille depictions of faces, as well as an exceptional ensemble featuring the Tree of Jesse.

Culture

The Maison Mauresque is a remarkable private building on the banks of the Seine, with exterior architecture in the Hispano-Moorish style. It combines an older house with an extension dating from the early 20th century by Victor Madeleine, who set up his studio and a photographic laboratory there.

The Gaillon quarries were initially worked in open-cast mining from the 12th century and later underground; they were subsequently used for mushroom cultivation until 2000. An entrance with two Gothic arches was built in 1762 and 1765. Another entrance, the Carrière des Anglais, features a Romanesque arch dating from 1896. Stone from the quarries was used for the Panthéon, the Gare de l’Est, the Bourse de Paris and parts of the Palace of Versailles. The quarries are currently not safe enough for guided tours.

History

The Mur du Roy was built during the reign of Louis XIV to protect the crops from game from the Forest of Saint-Germain. The old stone wall is also known as the Mur blanc and extends for several kilometres along the Seine from the Chemin du Val à Gaillon to the Rue des Grosses Eaux.

The Tour Penchée is the surviving remains of a well with a windmill that served as a hydraulic drive, as described on the occasion of a sale in 1880.

Seine

The Passeur landing stage is located at the Quai du Génie near the Maison du Passeur. The Passeur is a river ferry that allows people to cross the Seine on foot or by bicycle.

Getting Around

The municipal market takes place three times a week on the Place de la Halle. Public transport in Herblay-sur-Seine is centred on the SNCF railway station, with connections to Transilien line J, and the bus station with the Val d’Oise bus network; it is supplemented by the Citéval local bus.

The “Tous à vélo” event included a 17-kilometre cycling loop starting from the Parc de la Mairie; the route was accessible to all ability levels.
