Culture and History
The Church of Vico houses the statue “Saint Joseph et l’Enfant Jésus”, a gilded, polychrome wooden work dating from the mid to late 19th century. It has been listed as an object among the historic monuments since 1988.
Construction of the Saint-François Monastery in Vico began in 1481 for the Franciscans at the order of Lord Giovan Paolo de Leca. After being rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery forms a U-shaped complex with a cloister, chapel and monastery wings. It has been inhabited by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate since 1836. The monastery church houses U Santu Franciscone, a large polychrome wooden Christ.
The tomb of Father Albini is located in Saint-François Monastery in Vico; he is commemorated there every year on 20 May.
The ancient figure of Appriciani is a rock shaped like a human head and was classified as a historic monument in 1840. Immediately below the village of Vico lies A Funtana Vechja, which was its only spring for several centuries. After the water was confirmed to be drinkable, visitors were able to use the historic spring.
In the heart of Vico, a bronze statue of Bishop Casanelli d'Istria stands in a shaded square. The Church of Saint Paul and Saint Damien of Nesa was built between 1863 and 1871 and offers panoramic views of the village of Vico.
Trails and Landscape
The “Vico au sommet de la Cuma” route begins in the hamlet of Nesa and climbs into the forest.
