Nature
The Marais de Courmelois in Val-de-Vesle is a 28.48-hectare protected marsh and wetland area. It forms part of the Natura 2000 site “Marais de la Vesle en amont de Reims” and consists of a mosaic of habitats that are favourable to the fauna and flora of peatland wetlands. No discovery trail has been designated for the Marais de Courmelois.
The horse chestnut tree of Val-de-Vesle was planted in 1848 and designated an “Arbre Remarquable de France” in 2019. To mark the 50th anniversary of Val-de-Vesle, the municipality planted a bald cypress; it is called the “Arbre du Cinquantenaire”.
Culture and History
The visible Romanesque elements of the Église Saint-Maur de Courmelois – the crossing and the square tower above it – date from the 12th century.
The church of Wez has the dual dedication of Notre Dame and Saint-Éloi. It was completely destroyed in 1918 and rebuilt following a resolution of the municipal council dated 6 January 1928. The church of Wez became the place of worship of the new municipality of Val-de-Vesle.
The Mausolée Alexandre de Bary was built in 1903 in the grounds of the château in memory of Alexandre de Bary. It has a 12-metre-wide domed roof with a front opening 8.5 metres wide and was restored in 2019.
Leisure
Zig Zag Parc is an eight-hectare leisure park on the riverbank in Val-de-Vesle, featuring corn mazes, play trails in the wheat and flower picking. Zig Zag Parc also offers a 200-metre zip line, a pedal go-kart track, inflatables, archery, wooden games and other outdoor activities.
In June 2019, seven totems were installed in Val-de-Vesle to enhance walks through the village.
Getting Around
Val-de-Vesle railway station is located on the outskirts of the village at 15 Rue de la Libération.
