Isles-Sur-Suippe: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Isles-sur-Suippe lies between two branches of the Suippe, which form several islands there. The river shapes an idyllic landscape, complemented by the immediately adjacent forests. Two artificial waterfalls were used to harness the canalised Suippe to supply energy to the local spinning mill and the mill.

Culture

The Church of Saint Rémi contains a square Romanesque tower dating from the 12th century. Its stained-glass windows date from 1892 and were created by Vermonet and Pommery. The organ was built around 1860 by the renowned Merklin-Fortin company; it currently has two manuals, a pedalboard and around 400 pipes. The organ in the church in Isles-sur-Suippe was also restored to working order by a team of dedicated volunteers led by organ builder Michel Gaillard. Saint Rémi is part of the circuit of churches dedicated to Saint Remigius.

At the end of Rue du Piquelet, the Chignicourt mill spans two branches of the Suippe and dates from 1921. It ceased operating in the 1980s after two successive fires. Built of brick, the Villa des Rosiers features elaborate decorative details and intricately crafted balconies.

History

Archaeological excavations at the Les Sohettes site uncovered an extensive area containing urn burials, enclosures, wells, silos and numerous sunken structures dating from the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. In 2016, archaeologists discovered the remains of six cattle, a horse and a young man in a well dug around 100 BC. A royal posting station was established in Isles-sur-Suippe in the 17th century.

Festivals and Fishing

The annual festival of Isles-sur-Suippe takes place on the last Sunday in September. Fishing is permitted on a listed section of the Suippe for holders of a fishing licence issued by an AAPPMA in Département 51 or an inter-federal fishing licence; the section extends to the municipal boundary between Warmeriville and Isles-sur-Suippe. Members of the local angling club mostly practise fishing according to the “No-Kill” principle.
