Culture and History
The German military cemetery of Connantre was established in 1922 by the French military authorities as a central cemetery for German soldiers who had fallen in 67 municipalities. They died south of the river during the First Battle of the Marne in early September 1914. A central terracotta sculpture in the cemetery, made by the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, is protected by an intricately crafted copper grille.
The Église Saint-Caprais in Connantre contains an 18th-century tabernacle and cross; both are made of carved wood. Next to the church of Connantre, at the site of the former cemetery, is the grave of Alexandre Chepeleff.
