Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Didier in Aujeurres appears to have been built entirely in the 13th century and has a Latin cross-shaped floor plan. The church houses a reliquary bust entitled “Saint Didier évêque”. The painted, silver-plated and gilded wooden sculpture dates from the 18th century and was classified as a protected object on 5 June 1967.
The Chapel of Saint George is designed in the Neo-Gothic style, has a small roof turret and depicts Saint George on horseback defeating a dragon on the tympanum above the entrance. It stands on the edge of the former Roman road from Langres to Autun; it is documented as early as around the year 1000. It was rebuilt in 1832, reconstructed again after further damage in 1866, and consecrated in 1868.
On Aujeurres’ public square stands the Fontaine de la « Peûte Bête », an 18th-century fountain that was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments on 1 February 1929. The fountain was built in 1836 according to designs by the Langres-born architect Onésime Luquet; the construction project dates from 1832. Four gargoyles enhance the village walk along the road to this fountain.
The washhouse in Aujeurres, on the Départementale 141d, was completely renovated in 2003 and 2004 and is now decorated with five frescoes by painters from the “Pigment” group.
Hiking
The Sentier de découverte de la source de l'Aube has eight information panels along its route. The Fontaine du Val des Frais is a refreshing rest stop for hikers on the circular trail to the source of the Aube.
Surroundings
The Abbaye d'Auberive is a monastery in the area surrounding Aujeurres. In the wider regional area are the Abbaye Notre-Dame Vauxbons, the Abbaye de Belmont and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Longuay, all historic sites. Le Maumont and Mont Mercure are hills in the area.
