Holiday apartment in Châtenoy: nature, culture and paths along the Canal d’Orléans

Châtenoy invites you on a journey where architectural heritage and waterscapes create distinct impressions. Châtenoy combines architectural heritage, water and nature, including Château de la Rivière, Église Saint-Loup, Noue Mazone, Canal d’Orléans and the nature garden. The Canal d’Orléans runs through Châtenoy; the forest pond, wetland and nature garden complete the picture of the village.

Culture between château and church

Château de la Rivière was built at the end of the 16th century on the orders of Nicolas de Harlay de Sancy. Its façades are made of pink bricks, and the château is surrounded by moats. It is partly protected as a “Monument historique”; this protection has been in place since 16 October 1961.

Église Saint-Loup at the entrance to Châtenoy was built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1861. The château and church therefore tell the story of the village’s architectural development in different ways.

Water and natural environment

Noue Mazone is a 34.8-hectare forest pond with numerous bird species and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Étang de la Noue Mazone lies within the territories of Châtenoy and Coudroy and forms part of the Canal d’Orléans water supply system. The Huillard River also rises in Châtenoy.

A very easy, 4.5-kilometre hiking route leads through the Noue Mazone wetland; it can also be used for Nordic walking and running. Châtenoy also has four short hiking trails. The 4.5 kilometres provide a clearly defined distance for planning a walking or running route.

Paths, garden and practical orientation

The Balade de Chatenoy is a circular hiking route through forest paths. In Châtenoy, the towpath along the Canal d’Orléans is designated as an option for cycle tourism. Depending on your plans for the day, this allows you to distinguish between forest paths, the wetland and the canal experience.

Jardin des Rondeaux is a 7,000-square-metre nature garden with collections of shrubs and perennials. In the nature garden, collections of shrubs and perennials form a distinct planting focus. Châtenoy also has a shop awarded the “Loiret Pause” label. When travelling by car, the D 948 and D 2060 can be incorporated into your plans for the day.

Combining culture, nature and paths

Those wishing to combine culture and nature will find Château de la Rivière, Église Saint-Loup, Noue Mazone, the Canal d’Orléans and Jardin des Rondeaux in Châtenoy. For exercise, there are the Balade de Chatenoy, the 4.5-kilometre route through the wetland and the towpath designated as an option for cycle tourism.
