Culture and History
The medieval town of Saint-Aignan is designated as a “Remarkable Heritage Site”. The Château de Saint-Aignan is a Renaissance château decorated with the scallop shell of Saint James and the salamander of Francis I.
Although the Château de Saint-Aignan is privately owned and cannot be visited, its courtyard of honour and terrace can be accessed via a staircase from the collegiate church. The Tour Hagard is the surviving remnant of the 9th-century fortress on the site of which the Château de Saint-Aignan was built.
The collegiate church of Saint-Aignan was built in the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint John and is protected as a historic monument.
The nave of the collegiate church of Saint-Aignan is 16 metres high and is supported by eight columns with sculpted capitals. La Prévôté is a 14th-century Gothic house where art exhibitions are held from May to September.
Villa Rose is a house built at the beginning of the 20th century and covered with a recently restored sgraffito fresco. The municipal “Step by Step” walking tour leads through the streets of Saint-Aignan to lesser-known places in the town.
Getting Around
Saint-Aignan can be reached by train via Saint-Aignan/Noyers railway station. The “Cœur de France à Vélo” route continues towards Selles-sur-Cher and follows the Canal de Berry along the way.
