The architectural and local history of Authon includes the former Abbey of L’Étoile. It was founded in the 1130s by Geoffroy Grisegonelle, Count of Vendôme, and his wife Mathilde de Châteaudun, and belonged to the Premonstratensian Order. The abbey church retains its original western portal. The present-day Château du Fresne was built from 1766 onwards by the architect Anatole Amoudru on the foundations of the former manor house.

History and Architectural Heritage

The present-day Église Saint-Hilaire in Authon was rebuilt between 1860 and 1885. It contains a bronze bell cast in 1808 by Husson and Colin, which is protected as a historic monument.

The grounds of Château du Fresne include an extensive lawn, plantings of various tree and shrub species, an artificial pond, planted paths, and an enclosed fruit and vegetable garden.

A Neolithic polishing stone was discovered in Authon near the Danube. The Abbaye Saint-Sauveur de l'Etoile monastery (Authon, Loir-et-Cher) is also located in the immediate vicinity of Authon. The historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Gâtines is situated near Authon. Further afield in the region are the historic site of Abbaye de la Virginité and Château de Baudry.

Landscape and Nature

In Authon, agricultural land and forests alternate across a hilly landscape crossed by the waterways La Brenne, Le Rondy, La Glaise, and the Danube.

Authon used to have very many ponds; in some places, they were less than 200 metres apart. These pond habitats are visited by birds, bats, and dragonflies.
