The ruins of the walls, gates and towers of Mennetou-sur-Cher were classified as historic monuments by decree on 24 December 1913. Of the four original square gates of the fortifications, the north, south and east gates have survived; five round towers stand on the ramparts.
Culture and History
The wooden drawbridge and its mechanism at the Canal de Berry, together with the stone boundary posts that frame it, have been listed as historic monuments since 17 May 2013.
Mennetou-sur-Cher was founded in the 13th century and developed because of its strategic location on a former trade route between Bourges and Tours.
The Grange aux Dîmes is one of the oldest buildings in Mennetou-sur-Cher; it rests on foundations dating from the 11th century and is classified as Angevin Gothic. The Église Saint-Urbain was built in the 13th century. Mennetou-sur-Cher is home to half-timbered houses dating from the 15th century.
The medieval village of Mennetou-sur-Cher is freely accessible all year round. In summer, guided torchlit tours of the medieval town are offered by reservation; group tours are possible throughout the year, during the day or at night.
On the Canal de Berry
Between Selles-sur-Cher and Mennetou-sur-Cher, the Cœur de France à vélo cycling route follows the Canal de Berry along a safe and peaceful route.
