Culture and History
The Romanesque church of Translation-de-Saint-Martin was built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. Its semi-domed apse and part of its nave, with walls made of small masonry units, have been preserved. The church has bells from the 15th and 18th centuries, which are listed in the register of Monuments historiques.
The Château de Ports was designed for military purposes and dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. A rectangular residential building with stone mullioned windows has been preserved above an extensive barrel-vaulted cellar. Since 1956, the Château de Ports has been used by an artists’ workshop.
The name Ports bears witness to earlier shipping on the Vienne. The history of Ports is closely connected with the production of bricks and lime, as well as electricity generation in the valley.
