Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Martin in Ligueil was founded in the 12th century and remodelled in the 13th and 15th centuries. Its main altar with tabernacle and altarpiece dates from the 17th century. The choir has been partially protected as a historic monument since 12 June 1926.

The Château d’Epigny is a small château dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, surrounded by a wooded, enclosed park. Its façades and roofs have been partially protected as historic monuments since 27 November 1951.

La Seigneurie is an imposing building dating from the 14th and 15th centuries and has housed Ligueil Town Hall since it was acquired by the municipality in 1922. La Chancellerie is also located on Rue Aristide Briand, a 16th-century building that was probably the residence of the treasurers of the Barony of Ligueil.

Festivals and Events

The Notre-Dame-des-Anges Chapel in Ligueil was rebuilt in its current neo-Gothic form in 1871. A ceremony, pilgrimage and procession take place at the chapel every year on 15 August.

The annual events calendar also includes Les Percufolies. The festival is dedicated to percussion and includes street performances and concerts.

Paths through the Countryside

The easy hiking trail “L’Esves dans son écrin” starts and ends in Ligueil, is around 9.4 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. It leads through the Esves Valley and along the river bends. From tree-lined paths, farmhouses and small châteaux set on higher ground, there are views across the hilly landscape.

Another easy route is the “Balade entre l’Esves et la Ligoire” hiking trail. This trail also starts and ends in Ligueil, is around 9.6 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes. It follows the two rivers Esves and Ligoire through a hilly landscape with farmhouses and hamlets.
