Water and trails
The “Les étangs du Prieuré” walking route is 15.8 km long and offers a 5.1 km variant; it is classified as easy. The route starts and ends at the Étang du Louroux and is marked in yellow.
A shorter loop is the 5.2 km “Label Balade” walking trail, which runs in a loop around the Étang du Louroux. The “Les ailes du Louroux” walking route is also 18.6 km long.
The Étang du Louroux area consists of two ponds: the 55-hectare Étang des Roseaux and the adjacent 5-hectare Étang de Beaulieu.
Nature
The wetland at the Étang du Louroux includes wooded areas in the northwest and meadows in the south, as well as a diverse mosaic of natural habitats that is home to numerous species and breeding birds.
The approximately 1.35 km interpretation trail at the Étang du Louroux includes an observation tower accessible to people with auditory, intellectual, motor, and visual disabilities. Another ornithological observation tower at the Étang du Louroux makes it possible to observe and identify the birds found there.
History and culture
The Le Louroux interpretation programme comprises 14 panels introducing visitors to the priory, the village, and the Étang du Louroux.
The Priory of Le Louroux, also known as Château du Louroux, was founded in the 11th century by Marmoutier Abbey. The Le Louroux priory complex includes the prior’s residence, two barns, a dovecote, and the Church of Saint-Sulpice, dedicated to Saint Sulpicius.
