Hiking

Le Boulay is criss-crossed by a network of hiking trails. These include the “Balade Familiale”, a 3 km-long, very easy walking route starting at 1 allée des Tilleuls, and the “Circuit Le Boulay”, a 9 km-long, easy hiking trail that also begins at 1 allée des Tilleuls.

Hiking brochures for Le Boulay are available from the town hall or the Château-Renault tourist office. The “Le Pain Sec” hiking trail partly follows the former railway line, which also ran through Rue de la Gare.

Nature

La Mulochère is the highest point in Le Boulay. The Glaise forms the northern and northeastern municipal boundary of Le Boulay up to its confluence with the Brenne, and is 12 km long.

Culture

The Saint-Sulpice Church in Le Boulay corresponds to the chapel of the former priory. The high altar reredos in the church is made of stone; the altar and tabernacle are made of wood.

The architecturally designed high altar reredos is sculpted, painted and gilded, consists of three sections, and follows the semicircular layout of the apse. It bears the inscription “Fecit Charpantier”.

The central painting of the reredos is an oil painting on canvas depicting the Annunciation. The Annunciation of Le Boulay is a copy of an oil painting by Francesco Albani (1578–1660), known as “l’Albane”, created around 1625–1630 and now kept in the Louvre.

The Church of Saint-Sulpice also contains the tombstone of Françoise de Montgarny. It was protected as a movable cultural heritage object on 24 February 1921.

An inscription on the Annunciation suggests that S. Desmares, a nun from the priory, painted the picture in 1695 at the age of 27 and donated it to the convent.

History

A priory of Benedictine nuns was founded in Le Boulay in the mid-12th century. Le Boulay town hall is located in the former Benedictine priory, more precisely in the former rectory. The building dates from the 16th century.

A small mill once operated in Le Boulay at the confluence of the Glaise and the Brenne.
