Culture and History
The Église Saint-Germain has a nave and transept dating from the 11th century, as well as a choir from the 13th century. The nave, transept, and choir were classified as historic monuments by a decree dated 19 June 1946. During the construction of the façade and bell tower in 1861, the flooring of a Merovingian baptistery was rediscovered.
The Château de Mesvres preserves significant remains of the 12th-century fortress, including thick walls in opus spicatum. The Château de Mesvres also has a square keep with a 13th-century base and an upper section dating from the 15th century.
The Château de Civray-de-Touraine was built in 1715 by Louis Lhomme de la Pinsonnière and later remodelled during the Restoration. Its 4-hectare estate includes a landscaped park with centuries-old trees, colourful flowerbeds, and a basin with fountains. By appointment, the Château de Civray-de-Touraine offers groups guided tours with commentary of the ground floor and grounds.
Wine
The Caves du Père Auguste winery covers 40 hectares of vineyards on the hillsides between Civray-de-Touraine and Chenonceaux. 150 years ago, the ancestor of the Père Auguste family settled here and began quarrying tuffeau beneath the hill planted with the family’s vines.
At the Caves du Père Auguste, visitors can take a self-guided tour or, subject to availability, a guided tour. This is followed by a commented tasting of white, rosé, and red wines, as well as sparkling wines; grape juice is available for children.
Water and Cycling
