Joigny: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

Joigny combines traces of history from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance with excursions on Burgundy’s canals and vineyards on the slopes above the town. Anyone who has chosen Joigny as a travel destination may be planning to rent a vacation apartment there.

Culture

The Église Saint-André was built from the 14th to the 16th century and has a Renaissance portal with a frieze depicting the judgment and martyrdom of Saint Andrew. The Église Saint-Thibault, built between 1490 and 1529, combines Gothic and Renaissance styles; its square tower is crowned by a campanile, and the interior features rich furnishings.

The Église Saint-Jean is essentially a 16th-century building and houses a white marble tomb as well as the tomb of Countess Adélaïs de Joigny. The Château des Gondi is a Renaissance building constructed between 1569 and 1613, but its interior is not open to visitors.

Historic houses include the Maison de l’Arbre de Jessé, a 16th-century half-timbered house whose façade depicts the genealogy of Christ, and the 16th-century Maison du Bailli, with carved timber framing on two façades. The Maison du Pilori is also a 16th-century half-timbered house; its façade is decorated with ceramic tiles and features carved pillars. The Porte du Bois is the last of Joigny’s four medieval gates and is flanked by two round towers.

The Musée de la Résistance – Groupe Jovinien Bayard was founded as a memorial in 1945. It documents the resistance to the Nazi occupation and the Vichy regime from 1940 to 1944.

Water and Trails

Le Fistoulik offers boat trips from Joigny to explore Burgundy’s canals, with commentary on the canals, the places visited, the fauna and flora, and passing through locks. Open Kayak in Joigny rents out canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and bicycles at a location opposite the Camping d’Épizy.

A véloroute can be reached from Sens or Auxerre to Joigny.

Wine

The AOC Bourgogne appellation is defined on the slopes overlooking the town of Joigny; 13 hectares of the Côte Saint-Jacques carry the additional designation Bourgogne Côte Saint-Jacques.
