The Église Saint-Martin de Grevilly is a Romanesque church dating from the first quarter of the 12th century. The listed site “Église, cimetière avec ses plantations de sapins et mur de clôture” comprises the ensemble of the church, cemetery, fir tree plantings and enclosing wall; it was placed under protection on 24 March 1942.

Archaeological excavations in 2019 showed that the site was already inhabited during the Merovingian period, between the 5th and 8th centuries. Older elements were uncovered in front of the current foundations. Saint-Martin de Grevilly also houses a polychrome wooden statue of the crowned Virgin Mary. The apse has retained its roof covering of stone slabs, known as lauzes.

The Stations of the Cross lithographs in Saint-Martin de Grevilly were restored with financial support from the local association. The Saint-Martin de Grevilly association regularly organises exhibitions and concerts in the church to fund its restoration.

Landscape

The listed site with its church and cemetery lies near the summit of a hill in the Mâconnais range and offers views of the surrounding valleys and the village of Brancion. The Mâcon-Cruzille wine-growing area also includes, along its eastern edge, the eastern flank of the short Lugny range on both sides of the village of Grevilly.

The section of the hiking stage from Tournus to Lugny near Grevilly follows broad panoramic paths and passes through vineyards, offering views of medieval Brancion. The most scenic approach to Grevilly leads via Ozenay and Chavy; this is followed by a three-kilometre winding ascent through a wooded area.

Hiking

The hiking stage from Tournus to Lugny is moderately difficult, 20.1 kilometres long and takes approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes; it passes through Grevilly and follows the GR 76B.

In the wider regional surroundings of Grevilly, “Lugny, le Mâconnais Panoramique” is a marked hiking trail of moderate difficulty covering 16.1 kilometres and following scenic paths, notable buildings and vineyard trails.
