The Eolienne de Vignol is a metal wind pump from the early 20th century. It was built to supply the village with water and fitted with a Bollée drive system. The Eolienne forms part of the protected heritage ensemble “Eolienne et lavoir”, which was placed under heritage protection by decree dated 28 March 1996.

Culture and History

The Église paroissiale Saint-Nazaire Saint-Celse in Vignol features significant construction phases from the 12th century, the fourth quarter of the 15th century and the second half of the 19th century. It preserves an earlier Romanesque apse; an inscription bearing the year 1496 is found on a corbel stone in the left chapel. The nave has three bays, two side chapels and a polygonal apse.

The cemetery cross in Vignol dates from the transitional period between the 18th and 19th centuries. It has a circular masonry foundation, a monolithic base of the same shape and a square shaft with chamfered edges, made of two parts. Above it is a monolithic cross with bas-relief decoration.

The Lavoir de Vignol was built before the nearby wind pump. In the immediate vicinity of Vignol is the historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame-du-Réconfort. The historic site of Abbaye bénédictine Saint-Martin de Chors is also located near Vignol.

In the wider regional area around Vignol are the Artothèque de Clamecy museum, Château de Chastellux-sur-Cure and the Grottes d'Arcy caves.

Hiking and Landscape

The Bollée wind pump in Vignol could start operating in very light winds. The Vignol–Saizy–Mont Sabot section of the Tour de Vézelay is 5.1 km long. It is signposted with blue markings for a local hiking route; however, the markings are not well maintained, even though the route is easy to find.

The Lavoir de Vignol and the nearby wind pump are supplied by a spring that was called Fontaine de Chésamps in 1900 and is now identified with the Grande Fontaine stream, which irrigates the valley.
