Mont-Saint-Jean is a small medieval village with a distinctive castle complex and surviving traces from several centuries. The Château fort de Mont-Saint-Jean stands at the end of a rocky spur and overlooks the Serein Valley. Until the 14th century, it was the seat of an important castellany of the Duchy of Burgundy.

Culture and history
Most of the Château fort de Mont-Saint-Jean, including the keep, was built in the first half of the 13th century. The Château fort and its moats are classified as historic monuments; the walls and towers of the fortifications are listed as historic monuments.
The former hospital is also part of the history of the village. It is classified as a historic monument and was a medieval Maison-Dieu intended to accommodate pilgrims, travellers and those in need. The surviving buildings date from the late 12th or early 13th century.
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste preserves the crypt, choir, apses and bell tower of a 12th-century castle chapel. In the mid-15th century, it became the parish church; it was probably consecrated in 1453.
The Glanot Priory was founded in the 12th century and was dependent on Cluny. Its remains include parts of the church and a 16th-century dovecote.
Mont-Saint-Jean also has a museum of life in the Auxois, run by a local association. Guided tours of the museum are organised on request.
