Experiences

At La Ruche des Puys, guided tours explain the social organisation of bees and include glass beehives, an apiary and observations using a macro camera. Historical beekeeping equipment is on display in a former vaulted stable; admission to the tour is free during the shop’s opening hours. Various types of honey are also available for tasting, including acacia, mountain, buckthorn and chestnut honey.

Volcan de Lemptégy offers an interactive two-and-a-half-hour tour divided into five stages. “Le Réveil du Volcan” is a 1.5-kilometre nocturnal adventure trail there.

Landscape

Volcan de Lemptégy is located in the tectonic area “Chaîne des Puys – Faille de Limagne”, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Puy Chopine is a volcanic rock pinnacle formed when cold, acidic magma emerged through the crystalline bedrock.

La Cheire de Côme is one of the most significant lava flows in the Chaîne des Puys. It was formed around 15,000 years ago by the eruption of Puy de Côme. Numerous marked hiking trails cross the Cheire de Côme, which is also an important orienteering venue. Several challenging courses are available, with maps obtainable from the Office de Tourisme Auvergne VolcanSancy.

Hiking trails

Seven hiking trails start from Saint-Ours-les-Roches, ranging from 6 to more than 15 kilometres in length. The “Les puys de Jumes, de la Coquille et des Gouttes” circular hike in Saint-Ours is 15.5 kilometres long, rated difficult and takes five hours. The route offers panoramic views from Puy de Jumes and Puy de la Coquille.

Getting around

During the school holidays, a shuttle connects Vulcania with Clermont-Ferrand railway station, travelling via Chamalières, Royat and Orcines.
