The La ronde des Fruits is a 10.8-kilometre circular walk in Domaize with yellow PR trail markings. A second route, La croix 3 fourchoux, covers 8.9 kilometres, takes three hours and is also designated as a circular walk from Domaize with yellow PR trail markings.
The hiking route La croix 3 fourchoux begins at the church in Domaize. It leads to the Croix trois Fourchoux, returns to Domaize via the cemetery and the Faubourg, and ends beneath the market hall opposite the Château.
On the La ronde des Fruits route, the Mende is crossed at the Moulin de Recoule. It then follows a path above the Mende gorges. The route offers panoramic views of the Monts du Forez, Thiers, the Dore Valley, the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy, the Château de Mauzun and the surrounding villages.
Landscape and Agriculture
In the Sauvagnon Valley near Domaize, there were 1,800 fruit trees after the Second World War. Fruit trees and a distinctive form of land management also shape the surroundings at Cueilleurs de Nature: the site is managed holistically according to permaculture principles, and more than 200 fruit trees have been planted.
During the open days at Les Fleurs de Suzanne, visitors can take a guided tour of the operation, visit a market featuring local producers and craftspeople, and enjoy food and refreshments on site.
Culture and History
The Château de Domaize is a Renaissance building. The central section in particular was extensively remodelled in the 17th century, when a gallery was added.
The Église Saint-Loup de Domaize contains a copy of Rubens’ “Descent from the Cross” behind the altar. The coat-of-arms hall of the Lords of Domaize features a sequence of coats of arms surrounded by a cord and a palm.
La Recoule also refers to the local history of milling. In 1781, there were five mills there, including an oil mill. The grain mill at La Recoule bears the year 1893 on one of its walls and was converted into a sawmill before the Second World War.
