History
The Château de Cournon-d’Auvergne is also part of the town’s historic character. It was rebuilt by the de Strada family at the end of the 17th century and retains two medieval round towers. In the Middle Ages, the Tour de l’horloge served as a small gateway to the fortified village. Its clock remained in operation until 1868; the Tour de l’horloge also symbolised the rights acquired by the community of residents.

On the Vaugondières plateau, Côtes d’Auvergne vines were planted over just under 7 hectares in accordance with AOP requirements, including Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Gamay. The Conservatoire des cépages d’Auvergne is dedicated to preserving 22 old grape varieties.
Nature
The dry slopes of Cournon-d’Auvergne have been protected since 1992 under a prefectural decree for the protection of biotopes and have been included in the Natura 2000 network. Almost 270 species of flowering plants, 54 species of butterflies and just under 30 breeding bird species have been recorded on these slopes. The natural slopes of Cournon-d’Auvergne offer an exceptional panorama of the Sancy Massif and the volcanic chain of the Auvergne.
Lake and Leisure
The lake of Cournon-d’Auvergne is an 18-hectare nature and leisure area on the Allier River. The fishing jetty and beach access at the lake have been adapted for people with reduced mobility. The leisure complex at the lake has a 5,000 m² swimming area and water features.
