Nature and Trails
Le bois de la Faye is a 9.5-kilometre, very easy circular hike with 100 metres of ascent and is accessible to mountain bikes. The route runs between ponds and the Bois de la Faye; along the way, there are numerous viewpoints overlooking the Monts du Forez.
In the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park, Bort-l’Étang is considered the only municipality whose natural heritage includes Pilulaire à globules. Bort-l’Étang is also located in the Natura 2000 Plaine des Varennes area, a natural landscape characterised by meadows, ponds and bocage.
The numerous ponds and wetlands in Bort-l’Étang provide a habitat suitable for grey herons. The Brevet des Quatre Vents, circular route number 14, also passes through Bort-l’Étang.
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Pourçain is a Romanesque church dating from the 11th or 12th century. It has preserved most of its original structure, including double arches resting on corbels.
The protected elements of the Château de La Garde include the interior furnishings, the outbuildings – including kennels, sheds, a barn, a stable with tack room and attic, as well as an orangery – and the gardens.
The château also preserves a square tower known as the “Tour Charlemagne”, with Romanesque openings, some of which feature window seats.
The Villa de la Gagère and its outbuildings were listed as protected monuments by decree of 15 September 1993. The villa was rebuilt in 1838 on the foundations of an older building according to plans by the architect Mallay and features a unified neoclassical architectural style representative of its time.
Events
For the sixth Marché des Potiers, held on 23 and 24 May 2026, 32 potters from various regions of France were selected; various ceramic techniques were presented, including sigillata, faience, glazed earthenware, stoneware, porcelain and Raku.
The programme of the Marché des Potiers included children's activities, a demonstration on reproducing Gallo-Roman terra sigillata and an exhibition on the history of ceramics in Bort-l’Étang.
Transport
Lezoux railway station is indicated as the SNCF access point for Bort-l’Étang. The town is located near the major A71 motorway connections towards Paris, A72 towards Lyon, A75 towards Béziers and A89 towards Bordeaux.
